Tsutomu Yamaguchi heeft in zijn leven 2 atoombommen overleefd. Ongeloof? Verbijsterd?

Tsutomu werkte voor Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki als ingenieur. Tijdens de zomer van 1945 werd hij, samen met 2 collega’s, naar Hiroshima gestuurd. Toen hij opnieuw wou vertrekken zag hij de Enola Gay overvliegen, die net de Little Boy atoombom liet vallen.
Tsutomu was verbrand langs één kant van zijn lichaam, tijdelijk blind en zijn beide trommelvliezen waren gescheurd. Tsutomo negeert zijn verwondingen, en zet onmiddellijk de zoektocht in naar zijn collega’s. Daarna keert hij terug naar … Nagasaki.

Drie dagen later kwamen ze aan in Nagasaki, en gingen weer aan het werk. Op dat ogenblik viel 3 kilometer verder de Fat Man, de tweede atoombom…

Tsutoma overleeft de bom opnieuw. En leefde nog lang (en gelukkig). Hij is 93 geworden, stierf in 2010.
